Stanley Commons
Situated on what was once an underutilized parking lot on environmentally remediated land in Brooklyn’s East New York neighborhood, ELH and its partners developed Stanley Commons in response to a joint RFP by NYCHA and HPD. The project opened for occupancy in 2018.
Consisting of 240 affordable rental apartments spread across six low- and mid-rise buildings, Stanley Commons was designed to evoke Brownstone Brooklyn with glazed staircases on the façade of each building serving to animate the streetscape and provide a visual connection between the development and the larger neighborhood. Green spaces and private streets lined with mature trees traverse the site to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere for residents while making this large-scale development feel like a small town. The building’s contemporary design finishes incorporate a variety of colors, materials and textures to bring a lively, fresh presence to the neighborhood.

The campus includes a 19,000 square foot community facility—the Prince Joshua Avitto Community Center—which provides recreational and educational opportunities for youth and adults, offering a gymnasium, game room and multipurpose facilities. Managed by a partnership between Good Shepherd Services and Man Up!, the center offers residents and the community after-school programs, social services and college access programming.
Stanley Commons was built using durable, low maintenance building systems and materials and incorporates sustainable elements to conserve energy, reduce environmental impacts and promote a healthy environment for residents.
